Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region’s jobless rate at 5.5 per cent in March

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge-Medicine Hat economic region saw the second-lowest unemployment figure in the province last month.

March’s rate was 5.5 per cent. That’s a drop from 6.6 per cent in February.

Provincially, Alberta’s unemployment rate saw a slight drop last month.

The jobless rate was 6.5 per cent in March, a dip from 6.8 in February 2022. Comparatively, unemployment was at 9.0 per cent in March 2021.

Below is how each economic region in Alberta fared in March, with February’s rate listed in parenthesis:

  • Calgary: 7.6 per cent (7.6)
  • Edmonton: 7.5 per cent (7.1)
  • Red Deer: 6.9 per cent (7.1)
  • Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake: 6.1 per cent (6.9)
  • Camrose-Drumheller: 5.8 per cent (6.1)
  • Lethbridge-Medicine Hat: 5.5 per cent (6.6)
  • Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House and Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River: 5.3 per cent (5.2)

Statistics Canada said Friday, April 8 that the national economy added 72,500 jobs in March.

The unemployment rate fell to 5.3 per cent last month, compared with 5.5 per cent in February. Stats Can noted that the jobless rate in March is the lowest over comparable data going back to 1976.

The agency added that the rate would have been 7.2 per cent had it included in calculations of people who wanted a job but did not look for one.
