Jean satisfied with legitimacy of voters in Kenney’s leadership review

Apr 8, 2022 | 3:30 PM

EDMONTON – A high-profile critic of the United Conservative Party review of Premier Jason Kenney says he’s now satisfied most of those who registered to cast ballots are in some form legitimate.

New UCP caucus member Brian Jean expressed concern last week that many of the estimated 59,000 voters may have been improperly added to the rolls for the mail-in vote.

But he says he and other concerned parties have received new information by the party and are confident about 92 per cent of the signatures have some basis in legality.

He says if it’s a clean race, Kenney will not get the 50 per cent plus one he needs to stay on as leader.

Kenney has been openly feuding with some factions of his party, who believe his policies and management style have alienated supporters to the point the party will lose the next election.

Ballots will be distributed starting this weekend and a decision is to be announced May 18.
