Province increasing funds for program to protect places of worship

Mar 14, 2022 | 10:27 AM

Funding is being increased for an Alberta program that aims to protect places of worship from hate crimes and vandalism.

The Alberta Security Infrastructure Program originally offered $2 million annually to help religious facilities make security improvements.

It will now distribute $5 million — a plan the government announced in last month’s throne speech.

Premier Jason Kenney told a news conference at the Calgary Vietnamese Alliance Church yesterday that there’s been a spate of violence directed at Christian communities since he first announced the program at an Edmonton mosque last June.
