MHPS officers take the plunge for Special Olympics

MEDICINE HAT, AB– It was a bone chilling start to Saturday for members of the Medicine Hat Police Service as they jumped in the frigid waters all the raise money for the Special Olympics.

The Polar Plunge took place outside Fire Station 1, and members of the Medicine Hat Fire Service pitched in to help by filling the water tank and adding snow to make it extra cold.

Police Chief Mike Worden was one of three officers who took the plunge in support of the Special Olympics.

“It is so important, it is one of those things that is near and dear to our hearts. We know the athletes here try so hard and if we can raise money to help them them in the community and with the training, and the Olympics which we know are coming here in 2026, so this will continue and I do want to thank the people of Medicine Hat who donated,” Worden said.

Over $3000 was raised for athletes in our city. Kristen Sept, chair of the Special Olympics Medicine Hat said the money will go a long way.

“We have launched a majority of our sports again. We have been able to do a majority of them through COVID-19 in some form . Right now we are preparing for the Special Olympic Winter games which will be held next February,” she said.

Athletes in the city take part in a number of sports, including 5 pin bowling, 10 pin bowling, swimming, basketball and curling.
