Math and English K-3 curriculum coming this fall, grades 4-6 delayed to 2023

Alberta will move forward with three portions of its revised kindergarten to Grade 6 curriculum this fall.

The new mathematics and English language arts and literature curriculums will be implemented for students in kindergarten to Grade 3. The new curriculum for Grades 4-6 mathematics and English language arts and literature will be implemented in September 2023.

The physical education and wellness curriculum for kindergarten to Grade 6 will also be implemented this fall.

Education Minister Adriana LaGrange says math and English are two key areas where the youngest students are experiencing challenges.

“This will help our younger students who are in the critical early stages of their development strengthening their numeracy and literacy skills,” she said this afternoon.

The province will invest $191 million over three years to support curriculum implementation. This year, $59 million will be put into professional development of teachers to build their understanding of the new curriculum.

LaGrange said the timeline is based on advice from education system leaders, teachers and curriculum experts.

The final curriculum being implemented this fall will be available in April.

A number of professional learning opportunities will be available for teachers between May and September and the government will provide curriculum resources. Details will be provided to school authorities in April.

Recommendations on piloting and timelines for the remaining parts of the K-6 curriculum will be made by the province’s Curriculum Implementation Advisory Group by May.

In December the province announced it was pushing back implementation of the more heavily-criticized parts of its new curriculum – social studies, fine arts and science.
