TABER, AB – Crew members at the Taber Fire Department decided to shave their heads after one of their volunteer members, Rose Roll, was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, which is a type of bone marrow cancer, late last year.

When she saw what the fire department had done, she was stunned.

Roll said, “I was in absolute awe, like I cried like a river. I’m not kidding. Like, I was just so amazed, It’s just unbelievable. I was so scared of losing my hair and just, I think I associated it with kind of with disease and death, but you know, with cancer and stuff, and them doing this has just helped me so much.”

The department members shaved their heads March 1, 2022 and posted a video on Facebook showing everyone getting their hair shaved off. The post stated, “Rose is a vital part of our department and is always here to lend a helping hand, with a smile on her face, whenever needed. Even through her diagnosis and treatment, when she has been unable to be an active member on calls and in training, she has managed to maintain a presence in the department, helping out with events when her health allows, and showing up to the odd training night to cheer her team members on, ALWAYS with a smile and exuding positivity. She is a true symbol of strength and perseverance.”

Roll has been participating with Fire training as much as she can since starting chemotherapy. “They have been exceptionally supportive since my diagnosis in October 2021. I sincerely miss Fire calls and regular training.”

Roll started chemo in October 2021, and will receive a stem cell transplant at the end of this month from her own cells that were harvested. Recovery from the procedure can take as long as 12 months.
