Number of COVID hospitalizations in Alberta fell by 71 over the weekend

Feb 28, 2022 | 4:09 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest report on COVID-19 for Monday, covering statistics from the past three days.

In that time, 1,435 cases were confirmed across the province or an average of 478 per day. Currently, there are 9,188 active cases while 512,716 people have recovered.

With 7,393 tests conducted over the weekend, the positivity rate was 19.4 per cent.

It should be noted that, on January 10, the province limited the number of people who can get a PCR test from AHS for COVID-19 to only those in high-risk settings. This likely means that the amount of people who have actually contracted COVID since then would be higher than what is being reported by the province.

In the South Zone, 157 people tested positive, or 52 each day. Active infections in the region fell by 49.

Since Friday’s update, 14 Albertans died from COVID including five in the Calgary Zone, four in the Edmonton Zone, two each in the South and Central Zones, and one in the North Zone. To date, 3,912 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

The deaths in the South Zone were for residents of South Lethbridge and Medicine Hat.

Provincially, 1,224 patients are currently hospitalized including 83 who have been admitted to intensive care. This marks decreases of 71 for hospitalizations and five for ICU compared to our most recent report on Friday.
