MEDICINE HAT, AB – Blasts were heard throughout the night in Kyiv as Russia tries to take control of Ukraine’s capital.

For local Ukrainian-Canadian John Cherwonogrodzky, he has many relatives that are scattered across Ukraine.

“They haven’t been affected as much, although the entire county will be affected,” Cherwonogrodzky said while wearing a handmade shirt from a relative in Ukraine.

While he is born here, his parents are both from Ukraine. Cherwonogrodzky calls the whole situation heartwrenching and is thinking of his family.

“My uncle who’s in his 90s is now in Lviv looking after great-grandchildren because his children and grandchildren are policemen and they’re now in the reserves in the army doing what they can,” Cherwonogrodzky said.

He was last in Ukraine in 2019.
