‘Stay tuned’: Clark and council excited about what’s to come in Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s been months since Hatters have gathered for a public event like this.

Close to 300 people were at the Medicine Hat Lodge for Mayor Linnsie Clark’s first State of the City address and welcomed her to the stage with warm applause.

“Stay tuned” was a phrase Clark used often.

Elected in October, she and council are just starting to dig deeper into their priorities for the city. For Clark that includes ensuring a healthy and connected community.

“In order to be a community with a strong economy, we have to be a community with healthy people and we have to be a community where people want to live and love living,” Clark said. “So they are all connected.”

Some highlights of the past year include adding a social worker to the library and the #MyMHSummer campaign which encourages people to staycation in their own backyard.

Some things Hatter’s can look forward to this year are an Indigenous-led story tour, a hot air balloon festival in May and electric scooters this spring.

Clark is also excited about carbon capture and the city becoming a hydrogen hub.

“The benefit it would have for our economy, our local business retention, potential expansion and of course also our ability to attract new industry as well,” Clark said.

A huge concern for Hatters over the last few months has been high utility bills but Clark did not address that specifically in her speech

“You should hear more about that in the very near future.”
