Crestwood Rec Centre to begin reopening on Feb. 7

Feb 1, 2022 | 3:30 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Closed amid public health measures in the early days of the pandemic, Crestwood Rec Centre users were excited just before Christmas when council voted to reopen it.

On Tuesday the city put a date on the first phase of the reopening.

After about six weeks of preparation including filling the pool, water sampling, testing the mechanical system and hiring staff, Crestwood Rec Centre will reopen on Feb. 7.

The pool will be open for AquaFit and lane swimming and the fitness centre will also be open.

“So our initial plan is to open Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.,” says James Will, the City of Medicine Hat’s director of parks and recreation. “The next phase, which would happen likely in April when we go through our next phase of hiring, and we would expand those hours and we’re still considering what the next level impact will be if we were looking into the evening hours or if weekend hours are better. It all really depends on utilization.”

The city is offering $2 admission for February as a thank you to the community for their patience. Passes will be available next week and a pass to the Big Marble Go Centre will get you into Crestwood.

Phase two isn’t happening as quickly as Will would like and phase three is several months down the road. He says challenges hiring aquatic staff, a province-wide problem, is slowing the process.

The city is continuing to recruit for several part-time lifeguards/instructor positions. More information, including a list of qualifications, is available on the city’s careers page.

Will adds they’re excited to welcome the public back into the facility and that reopening the Crestwood Rec Centre should ease the pressure on the availability of swimming lessons, something he knows many families have struggled with to find in recent years.

“We’re looking at a bunch of different avenues for that,” he says.

Crestwood Rec Centre will operate under the Restrictions Exemption Program.
