City considering e-scooter pilot project in the spring

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A new mode of transportation could be coming to Medicine Hat this spring.

The city is in talks with a company that brings e-scooters into municipalities.

The conversation about a potential e-scooter pilot project started earlier this week at the Public Services Committee meeting. City councillor and committee member Alison Van Dyke said there was lots of enthusiasm about the idea.

“We are always looking for ways to increase vibrancy in the community and this seems like a fun and obvious thing to try,” Van Dyke said.

The city had been approached by a company, who can’t be named yet, about bringing the micro-transit opportunity to the Hat.

Brain Mastel with the city says the provider is very keen on coming here and would manage all aspects, including maintenance, storage and charging.

The city’s next steps are working towards bylaw aspects, an agreement act and working with the company regarding their needs.

It’s still in the early stages of planning but Mastel says it would be both a micro-transit and recreation opportunity.

“We know the trail system is valued a lot by residents in this community and the last couple of summers, we’ve seen even more activity on our trail network and we thought this would be a neat opportunity to bring a pilot to Medicine Hat and see how it works out here,” Mastel said.

The pilot project would have the scooters in Medicine Hat from the spring until the end of summer.

“I think it will be another attraction and another great opportunity for both people that live here in Medicine Hat and tourists that come in,” Van Dyke said. “It’s just another fun thing to do in the city.”
