Medicine Hat Public School Division short 23 substitutes Monday morning, every class still covered

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The potential substitute shortage Medicine Hat Public School Division was concerned about when students and teachers went back to school after Christmas break became a reality on Monday.

The division reported it started the day 23 substitutes short, the most superintendent Mark Davidson has ever seen. Many different school staff stepped up to help and every class was covered.

The division has contingency plans set up in case of a situation like this.

“Teachers who don’t have an all-day classroom assignment, they have a prep, or they’re classroom support teacher or counsellor or administrator, they’ll step in and take on those classes and when they exhaust that, then we have coaches and community ELP’s who will go and help,” Davidson said.

He also says Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Centre, Connaught School and Crestwood School have not received their shipments of rapid tests or masks.

Other school divisions aren’t dealing with quite the shortage the public division is. Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education was one substitute short Monday and Prairie Rose Public Schools has no staffing issues to report.
