Tigers deal Hopwo to ‘Canes for Barlage & a pick on deadline day

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Two of the Western Hockey League’s biggest rivals teamed up for a sizeable deal on WHL trade deadline day Monday.

Longtime Medicine Hat Tigers forward Corson Hopwo was moved to the Lethbridge Hurricanes half an hour before the trade window closed, with the Tigers receiving big overage centreman Logan Barlage and a 2022 fourth round pick in return.

Hopwo had spent his entire four-year WHL career in black and orange, tallying 43 goals and 96 points over 170 games in Medicine Hat.

A seventh round draft pick of the Tigers in 2016, Hopwo grew from a bottom-six prospect to a top-line goal scorer for Medicine Hat in the span of only a couple years.

Limited to 25 games played in his final season with the Tigers due to a lower-body injury suffered in mid-November, Hopwo sat tied for the team’s goal scoring lead with eight goals and 16 points.

In a statement, Tigers head coach and general manager Willie Desjardins praised Hopwo’s work ethic and leadership ability over his time in the ‘Gas City.’

“We’d like to thank Corson for his time, hard work, and commitment to the Tigers,” said Desjardins. “He has been a steady presence for the Tigers since 2018 and we wish him well moving forward in his career.”

Medicine Hat receives another 2001-born forward in Barlage in the deal, who was the fourth overall pick in the 2016 WHL Draft.

Traded to the Hurricanes from the Swift Current Broncos early in his career, the six-foot-five power forward is coming up on the 260th game of his five years in the WHL.

Barlage has racked up 57 goals and 154 career points between the Broncos and ‘Canes, and has posted seven goals and 17 points in 31 games with Lethbridge this season.

Desjardins believes Barlage will help solidify the centre of the ice, which has taken a hit since December’s trade involving former Tiger Lukas Svejkovsky.

“We’re excited to add a big, right shot centre ice man to the team,” said Desjardins in a statement. “Logan has been a consistent performer throughout his career and we’re looking forward to having his leadership in the room and his skill on the ice.”

With Monday’s trade deadline swap, the Tigers will close out the season with Barlage, Daniel Baker, and Carter Chorney as their three overage players.

Barlage’s debut in black and orange is expected to come on Friday night, when the Tigers kick off a two-game Saskatchewan road swing versus the Saskatoon Blades.
