Layla Vickerman seeks Cypress County Council seat

Jan 11, 2022 | 4:11 PM

CYPRESS COUNTY, AB – It’s a two-person race in Cypress County’s byelection.

Layla Vickerman made it official just before the Monday noon deadline.

“I feel it’s too important to our area to have somebody run unopposed and just come in and represent us,” she says.

Vickerman joins Keith Ritz seeking to represent Ward 9 Suffield.

One issue already stands out to Vickerman.

“One of the things that I think is important across the board, and this doesn’t matter whether you’re somebody in town or a rancher is better access to reliable broadband in our area, and affordable broadband,” she says. “We have a fantastic public library system with all these educational resources there and lots of people are struggling to be able to get on the internet in our area.”

She adds beyond that she’ll listen to what people tell her is important to them.

She says her past experience in the restaurant industry, energy industry and vehicles sales has taught her to be comfortable asking questions and deferring to experts when she should.

Vickerman says even though she would be representing one ward, she’ll look at the issues with the benefit of the entire county in mind.

She says as a councillor “you have to be looking at the entire county and how something benefits the entire county,” noting that if something is a great benefit to Suffield but hurts Hilda, it’s not going to go through in council.

Vickerman has lived in Suffield since 2015. She says she’ll soon be masked-up and out doorknocking, but for now the best way to get in touch with her is by calling 403-363-3149.

A byelection for the ward became necessary after the death of incumbent councillor Alf Belyea just before Election Day on Oct. 18.

Voting will take place at the Suffield Community Hall from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Feb. 7 with an advance poll on Feb. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
