Colder conditions forecast to resume: Environment Canada

Jan 10, 2022 | 11:06 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – There has been a dramatic shift in the weather Monday, as the cold snap residents have been experiencing lately has been replaced with warmer air.

However, Environment Canada says the milder temperatures likely won’t be around too long.

While it will remain warm possibly for the rest of the week, a return to more normal conditions is expected next week, and it could be even colder again later in the month.

“Because we still do have this La Nina (weather system), we’re expecting winter to end up being colder and a bit snowier than normal in southern Alberta for the .. January, February period. So it’s likely as we head towards the end of the month that we’re going to see cooler temperatures again,” said Kyle Fougere, Environment Canada meteorologist.

The federal weather agency says a shift in the polar jetstream allowed warmer air from the west to settle into the region Monday.

It follows several days of stubborn, cold arctic air pushing temperatures down in Alberta.

Medicine Hat saw extreme cold warnings, and on Dec. 28 alone, the city reached a low of -38 C.

Normal temperatures for Medicine Hat at this time of year are a high of -6 C and a low of -17 C.
