Electricity rate rises to more than 16 cents per kilowatt-hour

Electricity rates for City of Medicine Hat utility customers have risen by about three cents for the second consecutive month.

The monthly rates were posted by the city on Tuesday.

Electricity customers will pay 16.194 cents per kilowatt-hour this month, up from 13.184 per kilowatt-hour in December.

The fixed-rate offered by the city is 8 cents per kilowatt-hour, as of Jan. 1

The natural gas rate has been set at $3.646 per gigajoule, down from $4.792 in December.

The fixed-rate for 2022 is $4.35 per GJ, as of Jan. 1.

The monthly rates are determined based on the average set by other providers in the province.

The natural gas price is in the middle of the $3.398 set by Apex (formerly AltaGas) and the $3.893 set by Direct Energy.

The electricity price falls between the high of 16.406 cents set by Epcor (Edmonton) and the 15.876 cents set by Enmax.
