Water World Tubs wasn’t licensed for installations, city safety code manager says

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The City of Medicine Hat has issued a second notice to the public as inspectors are about to close a year-long safety investigation into work done by a local hot tub company.

Elgin Mann Jr., the city’s manager of safety code services, says Water World Tubs was licensed for sales and service of hot tubs.

“But then we found out they were removing hot tubs and installing hot tubs and they should have hired a licensed electrical contractor who is a master electrician who can pull the permit,” he explained. “You have to be a master electrician to pull electrical permits in the province. And they weren’t even journeymen electricians doing the work. So we deemed it unsafe and that’s why we reached out to the public to get any feedback.”

He says they received about 30 responses to the notice issued in December 2020, but have had no complaints of the company doing work since January when the business license expired.

He says as far as they know the company didn’t install any hot tubs since the license expired.

Of those 30 responses, Mann Jr. says some needed permits for repairs because of improper installations and others were approved on-site at an initial inspection.

Mann Jr. says people shouldn’t be hesitant to contact the planning and development services department by email at pbe@medicinehat.ca or by phone at 403-529-8374 if they had work done by Water World Tubs. The company is also known as Water World 2062939 ALBERTA LTD.

“We’ll look after them as best we can at no charge to them. We’ll do an initial inspection and assess the situation and give them advice on how to go forward and make sure the hot tub is safe.”

Callers are required to provide their name, address, phone number and relevant service dates. An inspection may be required and will be provided at no cost if deemed necessary.

Mann Jr. says that the Water World Tubs could be charged by the city under the Safety Codes Act for working without a permit where required, or the file could be sent to the province.
