Intrepretive Trail Now Open

Medicine Hat, AB–An expansion to an interpretive trail in Medicine Hat in now open to the public.

Ranchlands 2F&G features approximately 1.8 kilometers of trail that connects to an existing network in the residential subdivision and through to the Parkview Drive trail.

“This extension really started with residents in the area,” said Ian Hakes, Project Manager with Invest Medicine Hat. “This trail adds another recreation opportunity to the Ranchlands development.”

Staff began conversations around construction with Alberta Environment and Parks back in 2015. The trails weaves through area which is environmentally sensitive (protected) by the province. Staff worked closely with crews, ensuring all environmental rules and regulations were followed, protecting the surrounding sensitive landscape.

“This trail is built with limestone rock, as opposed to asphalt or red shale,” Hakes adds. “It’s an environmentally friendly material with a longer lifespan which enhances the natural area.”

Staff also worked with the province to develop interpretive signs, celebrating the local ecosystem. These signs provide trailer users with information about the local geology, wildlife, flora and archeology. The trail was also built to include two viewpoints of the South Saskatchewan River Valley.

Cyclists, joggers, walkers and pet owners are welcome to use the trail. The City asks that all users and pets remain on the trail to protect the seed and any local species at risk.
