Registration for FLC winter rec programs opens Tuesday

MEDICINE HAT, AB – You might want to prepare tonight and set an extra alarm for tomorrow when registration opens for Family Leisure Centre winter programming.

“Usually our swimming lessons are one our busiest classes and offerings,” said Michele Josey, community connections manager for parks and recreation at the city of Medicine Hat.

“We always suggest that people go online. So we’ve released all of the courses people can go in, take a look at what our offerings are, write down their codes, make sure that they set up their accounts ahead of time and then be ready for 7 o’clock am when registration opens.”

Josey also encourages people to add their names to waitlists.

“It kind of gives us an indication of what programs are full and if we’re able to add or alter some classes due to registration then we have a list of participants that are ready to go,” she said.

The programs and schedules can be viewed now on the city’s website and there are activities for all ages.

AquaStart is a new program Josey says the FLC is excited to offer for young swimmers six years of age and up.

“What it’s designed to do is help those kids that don’t necessarily have the skills to transition into swim kids one. So they go from the animals into the swim kid levels and so it’s designed to help them with that,” she said.

Returning favourites include pickleball, day camps, Tot Time, ultimate frisbee, play skate and more.

After not being able to offer much for programming 12 months ago due to pandemic-related restrictions, Josey said FLC staff is excited to be welcoming so many people back through the doors.

Josey says there are numerous health benefits to participating in these sorts of physical activities. They can help reduce feelings of anxiety and depression and for older clients it can help keep their minds thinking and learning and judgment skills sharp.

“We just appreciate that our programs and activities allow people to get together for our community to resume their activities and the benefit of being connected to each other,” she said.

The Family Leisure Centre is a participant in the Restrictions Exemption Program. Details are available on the city website.
