Honouring the veterans

Small Remembrance Day ceremony will be just as special

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Remembrance Day services in Medicine Hat will be smaller than in past years, but they’ll be no less special for those taking part or being honoured.

Just like in 2020, the regular program at the Esplanade will not be taking place due to public health restrictions.

But there will be a ceremony at the cenotaph in Riverside Veterans’ Memorial Park at 11 a.m.

Sheila Donner, president of the Robertson Memorial Branch 17 Legion in Medicine Hat, says there is some disappointment about the smaller ceremony, but they appreciate any show of support from the public.

“The reaction I’ve had from the veterans that I’ve spoken to is that it’s all about the poppy and it’s all about getting together as citizens and honouring the past and all the sacrifices that have been made over the many years by our veterans.”

Members from Canadian Forces Base Suffield, BATUS, South Alberta Light Horse, Medicine Hat Police Service, Royal Canadian Legion and more will form up outside the Esplanade at about 10:30 a.m. and parade to the park.

More than 150 people will take part in the ceremony at the park and there will be a viewing area set up for the public, who are also encouraged to line the parade route.

“When the parade forms up in past years when we’ve allowed the parade, it’s really nice to see them waving and clapping and so on and I know the veterans and serving members certainly appreciate the gratitude that’s shown when they do that,” she said.

The ceremony is also being streamed online by Cook Southland Funeral Chapel.

Donner says poppy sales have been good this year and the community always gets behind the veterans and the poppy drive.
