Halloween on the big screen and the front yard

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Two neighbours in South Ridge are going all out on Halloween decorating in their first year.

It started with a simple idea that continued – and continues – to grow.

“We were talking about doing Beetlejuice and then we bought a big screen for my daughter’s birthday and we’re like ‘hey, we should make it big. We should go big this year,’” explains Jessica Cosma.

That big screen shows Halloween movies nightly and is the centrepiece of a lawn at 69 and 71 Sprague Way SE filled with ghosts, witches, black cats and movie characters.

Cosma says people are welcome to stop by for a few minutes or watch the whole movie. The Oct. 31 movie is Beetlejuice.

She adds the students from George Davison School down the street are excited each day.

“Every day they’re just ‘oh look at that’ and ‘I didn’t notice that yesterday,’” Cosma said.

Halloween is usually thought of as scary and spooky. But the reasons Cosma and Julia Worme decorated are more heartwarming.

They just want to make everyone happy.

“We love the spirit, making the kids happy,” she said. “You know a little bit of the creepiness as the kids get older maybe we’ll get a little more scary. But right now we have younger ones so we’re trying to stay kid-friendly.”

Cosma says they’ll have lots of candy for trick-or-treaters on Sunday and are also looking ahead to decorate for Christmas.

Also helping decorate were Dustin Kunka, Shannon Kunka, Dobry Kunka, Dustin Kunka Jr., Maritsa Worme-Mike and Lelyn Mike.
