New collective agreements between city, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers

Oct 5, 2021 | 10:10 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Two collective agreements have been renewed between the City of Medicine Hat and the Local Union 254 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

The two agreements, which cover employees at the power plant, water treatment plant and electric distribution, are effective from Jan. 1, 2020 until Dec. 31, 2023. The previous deals expired on Dec. 31, 2019.

The renewal was official after the city ratified a mediator’s recommendation. The recommendation includes wage increases of 1.1 per cent effective Jan. 1, 2020; 1 per cent effective Jan. 1, 2021; 2 per cent effective Jan. 1, 2022; and 2 per cent effective Jan. 1, 2023. The recommendation also includes potential adjustments for 2021 and 2022 based on changes to the Alberta Consumer Price Index.

City manager Robert Nicolay says it was a long, complicated round of bargaining.

“We were able to work with IBEW to find an outcome that is mutually acceptable considering the general economic conditions in Alberta, providing certainty for the city, the union and our employees during very uncertain times.”
