MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Tigers are still searching for their first win of the season after dropping their home opener 3-2 to the Swift Current Broncos.

It took until the third period for Medicine Hat to find the back of the net, with Lukas Svejkovsky scoring both goals. But it wasn’t enough to for the win.

The Broncos came out strong, shutting out the Tigers in the first. Just over three minutes into the game, Caleb Wyrostok netted one past Garin Bjorklund. Teammate Josh Filmon followed that up with a powerplay goal four minutes later.

Raphael Pelletier scored Swift Current’s third and final goal of the night to help his team take a 3-0 lead after the first.

“We didn’t do quite the things we needed to,” Tigers head coach Willie Desjardins said. “I thought the first 10 minutes of the game, I thought we played really solid, we didn’t get many shots but we were in their zone the whole time. We just didn’t finish, we have to be better.”

Medicine Hat chased a comeback right into the third. Svejkovsky got the Tigers on the board halfway into the period. A few minutes later on a powerplay, Svejkovsky once again found the back of the net.

The Tigers outshot the Broncos 31-25 on Saturday night, but Swift Current swept the opening weekend home-and-home series.

It was 570 days since the Tigers played in front of their hometown crowd. Medicine Hat’s next game is on the road Friday, Oct. 8 against provincial rival Red Deer Rebels.
