Tigers blanked 2-0 by Broncos to open WHL season

Oct 1, 2021 | 10:38 PM

SWIFT CURRENT, SK – The return to the ice for the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday night didn’t go quite as anticipated, dropping their 2021-22 WHL season opener in Swift Current.

Medicine Hat’s offence wasn’t able to solve Broncos netminder Isaac Poulter, blanked 2-0 to kick off their regular season.

Poulter stopped all 20 shots Medicine Hat put on net, which included only five over the span of the third period.

Broncos sophomore star Mathew Ward scored Swift Current’s first goal of the season a little over 12 minutes into the first period on the power play, converting on a cross-ice feed from Owen Pickering.

It stayed that way until the early parts of the third period, when a Tigers defensive giveaway allowed Connor Hvidston to find Carter Stebbings for the insurance marker.

Medicine Hat attempted to come back in the third, however penalty troubles saw the puck stay firmly in the Tigers zone over the last few minutes of regulation.

Poulter was named the night’s first star with his shutout performance, while Garin Bjorklund made 21 stops in the loss.

Along with the other six games across the league on Friday night, the Tigers-Broncos game marked the return of fans inside WHL arenas for regular season action for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

Medicine Hat’s chance at redemption will come on Saturday night with their home opener at Co-Op Place, doors will open to the public at 5:30 pm with opening face-off against the Broncos set for 7:00 pm.
