Maternity-ward patients to be limited to one on-site support person

Sep 30, 2021 | 2:03 PM

MEDICINE HAT,AB- The number of designated support persons in a maternity will be limited. In a statement posted today, Alberta Health Services said only one designated support person will be permitted in the maternity unit as the province continues to manage the escalating impact of COVID-19 at Alberta hospitals.

“These adjustments are necessary to protect the health & safety of our patients/staff & to support patient care as we manage increasing capacity challenges. COVID-19, particularly the Delta variant, is highly infectious & pregnant individuals are at a higher risk of getting very sick,” Alberta Health Service said in a statement.

The changes are to take effect in the next four days throughout the province.

Alberta Health Services said requests for two designated support persons will be handled on a case by case basis.

All designated support persons must not enter a healthcare setting with COVID-19 symptoms.

Alberta Health Services noted sites with outbreaks or on-watch situations may have additional restrictions. Support persons are recommended to call ahead before entering.
