Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou reaches deferred prosecution agreement with U.S.

WASHINGTON – Meng Wanzhou, the Huawei Technologies executive detained in Canada since December 2018 to await extradition to the United States, has reached a deal with the U.S. government.

Meng pleaded not guilty to U.S. wire-fraud charges in a New York court proceeding today.

U.S. prosecutors say the plea is part of a deferred prosecution agreement reached with the U.S. Department of Justice, which was expected to allow Meng to be promptly returned to China.

Assistant U.S. Attorney David Kessler says that once everything is approved, Canada’s attorney general will be notified today that the U.S. is withdrawing its extradition request.

The U.S. Department of Justice had been seeking Meng’s extradition on fraud charges in connection with allegations the company conspired to avoid U.S. sanctions on Iran.

The agreement today could prove a critical step in Canada’s efforts to secure the release of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, two Canadian citizens who were detained in China following Meng’s arrest.
