‘I heart snacks!’: Not your everyday election sign in Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The campaign signs dotting the landscape all over Medicine Hat are hard to miss.

But you may have also noticed some other elections signs with a more humorous slant propped up along Dunmore Road.

And with messages like “I heart snacks” and “Look Mom, I’m on a sign!”, you may wonder how they’re also, in effect, election signs.

“You’d be driving down the road and you’d see ‘vote for me vote for vote for me.’ And then you see one that just says ‘I love snacks.’ Y’know, maybe (people) will actually pay attention to the different signs,” said Rob Andreas, the creator of the signs.

He says he’s hoping more voters will show up at municipal polls come election day, and decided to take action with the purchase of 100 signs, 50 of which are now posted on Dunmore Road or in people’s yards.

“I had one of my employees take a couple of pictures (of me), and they didn’t think it was going to happen, and I walked into the store with 100 of these signs, and they said ‘have you lost your mind?'” Andreas, the owner of Animal World, laughed.

Andreas said he was also hoping to lighten some moods in the city.

“If I can make some people laugh or smile at the ridiculousness of (my) signs, I think we could all use that, everything’s so serious these days.”
