First replacement in nearly 40 years

Glass windows being replaced at city hall

Sep 21, 2021 | 4:21 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The windows on Medicine Hat City Hall’s three-storey glass atrium and the as well as along the Legislative Hallway outside of council chambers are being replaced.

According to the city, the windows have reached the end of their useful life and are no longer providing the thermal protection required in the building’s unique glass architectural design.

“In recent years, condensation has appeared in multiple windows, showing evidence that the gas barrier between the panes has dissipated. This is a planned and budgeted capital improvement, allocated to the 2021 fiscal year,” the city says.

It’s the first time the windows have been replaced since the building opened in 1983.

Scaffolding and construction fencing is set up on the north side of the building and around at the main entrance. Access to city hall is currently limited to the southwest entrance near the sundial. Patrons may experience adjustments to the traffic flow within the building to accommodate the glass replacement, including the closure of the center staircase in the main lobby.

Portions of River Road or Sixth Avenue SE may be closed to facilitate the glass replacements; updates will be provided.
