MEDICINE HAT, AB — Work on the final section of the city’s overland flood protection strategy is nearing completion.

Crews are expected to finish work on the last leg of the project, on Industrial Avenue SE by the end of this month.

The third and final phase of this segment started in August, and municipal engineer Carlie Collier with municipal works says it will help relieve the stress and pressure felt each year when water levels begin to rise.

“Definitely it’s been a long time and it’s a big accomplishment and we’re happy to see that completed,” says Collier.

Coupled with temporary measures, Collier says residents are now better protected from flooding of the South Saskatchewan River, Seven Persons Creek and Ross Creek.

She also says she’s not eager to see them tested anytime soon.

The city started working on the flood protection program in 2014, the year after major flooding hit Medicine Hat and other parts of the province.

The budget for the work in the city was $36.5 million, with much of that money coming from federal and provincial governments.

Flood protection measures were previously completed in Riverside and Harlow areas of Medicine Hat.
