Bringing the library to the people

Pop-up library to make first appearance at FLC this week

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Public Library will be popping in to the Family Leisure Centre.

“We really want to bring the library to our community and reach people that maybe don’t use the library already and this seemed like a really good opportunity, explains adult and community librarian Miranda Leduc. “Because the library is all the way downtown and this is all the way up here and it gets a lot of traffic and so we’re hoping we’re going to hit a new demographic of kids and families.”

The pop-up library will be in the FLC main lobby from 3-5 p.m. this Thursday.

Leduc says there will be a wide variety of fiction books for all ages and picture books for the youngest children.

She adds they hope to eventually have 500 books for checkout at the pop up library.

People will be able to check out and return books and sign up for memberships. They hope to eventually be able to let people pay fines and hold a children’s storytime there.

The pop-up library will hopefully be able to draw people downtown by telling people at the FLC about what is available downtown.

“A lot of people don’t know we have for example video games,” explains Leduc. “So we’re going to try to advertise what we offer at the library and get new people hopefully down to use our stuff.”

The pop-up library will return to the FLC on Oct. 2 and 21.
