Doctors begging for government to lead, call for strict health measures

Sep 9, 2021 | 5:34 PM

Doctors from the Alberta advocacy group Protect Our Province say they were floored and had trouble putting into words their anger following the government’s COVID-19 update on Thursday.

Dr. Wing Li of Support our Students says it’s “non-sensical” that no school safety measures were added. In fact, no new restrictions or public health measures were announced today.

Health Minister Tyler Shandro announced additional supports for Home Care patients and residents in continuing care facilities.

Every public school in Medicine Hat has cases, every school,” said Li.

Medicine Hat emergency physician Dr. Paul Parks said it’s beyond time for the government to act and said he doesn’t want it to get to a point where he or any of his colleagues need to make a decision about who gets a ventilator and who doesn’t.

“We need help. We’re all begging for the government to lead,” he said.

He added it’s time for the unvaccinated who can be vaccinated to have restrictions put on them and the government is refusing “to take leadership and implement measures that we call know need to be done.”

Dr. Joe Vipond said the government doesn’t “give a f*** about Albertans.”

He called for a reinstitution of mandatory masks in schools, notification of positive cases to schools, good contact tracing, testing of asymptomatic cases, the closure of indoor dining and limits on the number of people at any gathering.

“Don’t let Albertans suffer because of your inaction,” he said.

Dr. Ilan Schwartz said the health-care system is at the brink of collapse right now.

He said people are going to die and at this point, the cause is negligence or “profound incompetence or malice” from the government.
