175 new cases in city, 4,903 in province

Four new COVID-19 deaths in Medicine Hat, hospital and ICU numbers rising

The number of active COVID-19 cases in the province has jumped by nearly 2,000 over the long weekend, and hospitalizations are up nearly 100.

Locally, Medicine Hat accounts for one-quarter of the weekend’s COVID deaths in the province.

There are 586 active cases of COVID-19 in Medicine Hat on Tuesday.

Medicine Hat has had 2,753 total cases – the 586 active, 2,132 recovered and there have been 35 deaths, four new since Friday.

There are 175 new cases in the city since the last update on Friday and 154 new recoveries.

An AHS spokesperson told CHAT News on Monday that there are currently 75 COVID-19 positive inpatients in the South Zone with 18 of those in the ICU. There are 33 inpatients at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital with eight in the ICU. The hospital has six more in-patients since Friday and three more COVID patients in ICU

MHRH has 10 ICU beds, but Medicine Hat physician Paul Parks said on Wednesday they don’t have the people to man them all as they did in previous waves of the pandemic.

Chinook Regional Hospital has 32 with 10 in the ICU. Cardston Health Centre has six inpatients, while Pincher Creek Health Centre and Brooks Health Centre each have two.

On Sunday a doctor at the Medicine Hat hospital detailed his first 48 hours on the COVID ward.

Among Hatters 12 and over, 73.3 per cent have received at least one dose of vaccine and 63.3 per cent are fully vaccinated.

63.6 per cent of all Hatters have received at least one dose of vaccine at the latest update and 57.6 per cent of Hatters are fully vaccinated.

There are 15,486 active cases in the province, up 1,991 from Friday, and 243,995 recovered cases in the province, up 2,895.

Alberta’s total cases from the start of the pandemic is 261,888.

There are 4,903 new cases in the province since the Friday update, and 1,786 more variant of concern cases have been identified.

There are now 602 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, 137 of which are in ICU, and 2,407 deaths.

The province completed 40,857 tests since the Friday update.

The positivity rate is about 12 per cent.

Alberta has administered 5,611,168 doses of vaccine at the latest update.

On Friday, the province announced a cash incentive and more public health restrictions in an attempt to encourage people to get vaccinated and stop the spread of the virus.

Among new cases today, 67.6 per cent are unvaccinated, 6.6 per cent are partially vaccinated and 25.8 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Among current hospitalizations, 71.3 per cent are unvaccinated, 4.7 per cent are partially vaccinated and 21 per cent are fully vaccinated.

The number of local outbreaks listed on AHS website has been rising across the city in the past weeks.

The city has the 11th-highest cases rate per 100,000 people at 860.3. The ID of Wood Buffalo has the highest rate at 21,294.2. There are 125 active cases among the small population of just 587 people.

Province-wide, 78.6 per cent of Albertans 12 years old and up have received at least one dose of vaccine and 70.6 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Among Alberta’s total population, 66.9 per cent have received at least one dose of vaccine and 60 per cent are fully vaccinated.

There are 1,567 active cases and 14,042 recovered in the South Zone. The death total in the zone is at 158.

The province-wide reproductive value for the week of Aug. 16-22 is 1.19. It is 1.05 in Calgary Zone, 1.32 in Edmonton Zone and 1.22 in the rest of Alberta.

It’s updated every two weeks. At the last update from Aug. 2-8 the numbers were 1.25 province-wide, 1.09 in Calgary Zone, 1.41 in Edmonton Zone and 1.41 in the rest of Alberta.

Cypress County has totaled 561 cases. There are 115 active cases, 445 recovered and one death. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 55 per cent, the two-dose rate is 48.8. The county has the fifth-highest case rate per 100,000 people at 1,017.8.

The County of Forty Mile has 179 total cases. There are eight active cases, 168 recovered and there have been three deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 31.8 per cent, the two-dose rate is 28.4.

The MD of Taber has 713 total cases — 106 active cases, 601 recovered and there have been six deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 38.7 per cent, the two-dose rate is 35.2.

Special Areas No. 2 has 134 total cases – 19 active cases, 114 recovered and there has been one death.

Brooks has 1,686 total cases — 97 active cases and 1,573 are recovered. Brooks has recorded 16 deaths.

The County of Newell has a total of 303 cases — 28 active cases, 271 recovered and there have been three deaths. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 53.5 per cent, the two-dose rate is 47.3. The Newell numbers include the city of Brooks.

The County of Warner has 505 total cases. There are 25 active cases, 477 are recovered cases and there have been three deaths in the county. The latest one-dose vaccination rate for all ages is 48.9 per cent, the two-dose rate is 43.

The City of Lethbridge has a total of 5,354 cases. There are 257 active cases, 5,057 recovered and there have been 40 deaths. Lethbridge County has 1,403 cases, 85 active cases, 1,304 recovered and there have been 14 deaths.

Not all the areas on the vaccination data map match the case count map.

The figures on alberta.ca are “up-to-date as of end of day Sept. 6, 2021.”

Saskatchewan has a total of 56,838 cases, 3,184 considered active. There are 53,041 recovered cases and there have been 613 COVID-19 deaths in the province.
