Playing on the porch: First PorchFest Medicine Hat set for Saturday

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Twelve porches on the Southeast Hill will become concert venues tomorrow for the first PorchFest Medicine Hat.

The last Saturday in August is International Play Music on the Porch Day.

Rob Pape, who runs the local Folk Music Club and Tongue on the Post Festival, wanted to bring the free event to our community. He co-organized it with his wife.

The performances will take place between noon and 5:30 p.m. They’re staggered so people can catch more than one performance on more than one porch.

“It’s an opportunity to get out, get healthy, go for a walk, check out some music, take in some music and you know, music makes everybody feel better,” says Pape. “So we want an opportunity to share the love and put as many of our community members in front of these musicians and musicians in front of our community members so that hopefully we all just support one another and help out in our community.”

Pape hopes people will park their cars and spend the afternoon strolling the neighbourhood. He says it’s free, open to everyone and people take in one show or as many as they want.

He adds there’s an abundance of amazingly talented musicians in Medicine Hat and each of the artists participating is a local musician.

One of those is Jack Humeny. He says it was an instant “yes” when he was asked to play.

“We’ve heard of these and then different house concerts and people have them but it’s just such an intriguing idea,” he says. “Because it’s getting people to be involved in the community and walk around get to know each other. I think it has a chance to make the neighbourhood a lot better even.”

Tomorrow afternoon’s forecast is showing sun and temperatures in the low 20s.
