MEDICINE HAT, AB — The move away from a private operator at the Co-op Place means the city will no longer be paying people to scan tickets, greet people and serve as ushers.

Instead, it’s now recruiting volunteers to do those jobs.

Brian Mastel, managing director of public services, says “when the event centre was operated by a private company, all of these positions were paid staff, but as a city-run facility, we’ve had to contemplate operational changes to reduce costs and find financial sustainability.”

He says a mix of paid staff and volunteers will help reduce the taxpayer burden while continuing to build civic pride and enhance the customer experience.

Aaron Nelson, manager of cultural, experiences and events with the city of Medicine Hat, says there are about 100 volunteers serving as ushers, greeters and tour guides, among other services.

The city says analysis of the operational and cost structure at Co-op Place looking at the sustainability of the venue included changes to the staffing structure.

A recent hiring fair at the Co-op Place resulted in nearly 100 additional hires in anticipation of the event season.

The city expects the volunteer recruitment program to provide additional support that will enhance the visitor experience.
