MHC requiring facemasks on campus

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat College has joined three of Alberta’s largest post-secondary institutions in requiring facemasks on campus.

On Tuesday the college announced non-medical face masks must be worn in all public indoor areas on campus, including classrooms, meeting rooms and common areas where physical distancing of two metres is not possible.

The University of Lethbridge, University of Calgary and University of Alberta are also requiring masks on campus. They are also requiring students, faculty and staff who are not fully vaccinated or don’t want to disclose their status to undergo ongoing rapid testing.

Medicine Hat College is not going down that route yet, but isn’t ruling anything out.

“In the next couple of days and weeks we’ll be looking at everything from rapid testing to vaccine clinics here on campus,” says president and CEO Kevin Shufflebotham.

Any further decisions the college makes have to be based on provincial protocols.

“But also we just need to look at what’s happening across our province and across our country and look at best practices,” he adds.

He also says vaccines are recognized as a critical way to limit the spread of COVID and strongly encourages all members of our community to get vaccinated.

The health measures cover both the Medicine Hat and Brooks campuses.
