Local MLAs strongly oppose vaccine passports

Aug 18, 2021 | 1:33 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – More governments, industries and businesses across the country are implementing rules for vaccine passports every day.

The Canadian government will soon require federal employees to show proof of vaccination and they will also be required from travellers coming into Canada. Provinces are also considering the use of vaccine passports.

However, Medicine Hat’s MLAs are opposed to the idea and say Alberta will not participate in this program.

“We’ve been very clear in that my constituents are overwhelmingly opposed to vaccine passports,” Brooks-Medicine Hat MLA Michaela Glasgo said. “I think it’s a very dangerous road to go down considering that there are a lot of people who are not vaccinated or who cannot be vaccinated for their own personal reasons. At the end of the day, this is a personal health decision.”

Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Drew Barns also disagrees with the idea.

“What an infringement on civil liberties,” Barnes said. “No, I’m not in favour of vaccine passports at all.”
