Virtual school option to become permanent for MHPSD

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Public School Division is going to continue The Hub at home learning school this fall.

It will be a permanent virtual school, with the board approving its creation this month. It will be offered for grades K-9.

The Hub had 448 registered students this year to support students during the pandemic.

For 2021-2022 there are now 104 students who want to continue with the format.

Superintendent Mark Davidson says there are many more who are interested and not just those in Medicine Hat.

Adding that the division decided to create a true school for the system as opposed to a program where all of their schools supported The Hub by sending staff.

Registration will happen throughout the summer and it’s open to all Alberta students.

Davidson says there are a number of virtual school options across the province.

“The vision of our school is to create something a lot more like a traditional school community where you have regular contact with your classmates, your teacher, they’re engaged with you throughout a school day.”

Davidson adds there were a number of students and families that said virtual school works for them and it’s a good way to do their learning.
