Police Chief looking for feedback on body cameras

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Since 2018, the Medicine Hat Police Service has used body cameras in its service.

Now Chief of Police Mike Worden wants to hear what the public thinks on further investment in the technology and if it would increase trust and responsibility.

Worden recently shared on social media he’s looking for community feedback on body cameras. The police currently use 10 cameras every day that are assigned to different teams.

Worden says it’s a tool to maintain trust and accountability with the public. He says using the cameras is an investment and an additional 10 cameras could cost between 25 and 30 thousand dollars.

In most cases, Worden says the feedback from officers on the body cameras is positive

“The camera and footage itself is there to show both the officer and the citizen what occurred and it has on many occurrences help clarify that concern and has help an officer share this is actually what happened and the things that were said,” Worden said. “In times of stress and in times of dynamic situations, people see and experience things differently and that really helps them understand what occurs.”
