Suspect in custody after string of assaults downtown

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A man who went on a punching spree downtown this morning is in custody.

According to a Medicine Hat Police Service release, the incident lasted about 10 minutes.

At about 8 a.m. police responded to a call of a male striking vehicles and screaming at pedestrians in the 600 block of Third Street SE. Police say a man punched a male pedestrian in the face, knocking him to the ground.

The suspect then entered the pedestrian underpass and struck a second male victim several times, including with a weapon.

The suspect exited the tunnel and police then received a report about the second assault and a man directing traffic in the middle of North Railway Street. A male driver rolled down his window to ask directions, at which time the suspect ran at him and punched him in the face.

Officers located the suspect a block away and arrested him without incident.

Police say each of the victims are being treated at the hospital for their physical injuries sustained during the attack.

The suspect, who can’t be named at this time, is held in custody awaiting a bail hearing and is facing numerous charges including assault with a weapon, two counts of assault and mischief.
