Travel plans starting to take off over the last few weeks

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Canada-U.S. Border is closed to non-essential travel until at least Monday, June 21.

The border closed on March 21, 2020 and has been extended on a monthly basis since.

But with COVID-19 vaccinations continuing across the country, and more public health restrictions easing, people are feeling ready to travel again.

Jackie Kirk with Vision Travel says winter vacation bookings have really taken off in the last two weeks.

Everyone is booking, including seniors, couples, and wedding groups are picking up again.

Kirk has spent the last year and a half re-booking and refunding trips.

Including cruises, where travellers have now postponed again and are booking for 2022.

Now, many travellers want to fly to visit family within Canada.

Others have family members in Europe and are looking to travel overseas.

Sun destinations were also missed over the last year.

Kirk expects travel will have a good winter season, which might start around November.

“A lot of people, because they didn’t go away last year, have actually saved funds, so now they’re actually booking bigger, longer trips,” she said. “Canada this last year has been very popular but I think people just want the experience, they want to do the adventure travel. You know the Galapagos, the Arctic, there’s quite a lot of adventure travel.”

However, with travel plans increasing Kirk says airlines are still cancelling flights.

COVID medical insurance is also being offered, which is separate from regular travel insurance most times.

She says some sun destination tour operators offer that additional coverage in their packages.

“The insurance companies came out with one because the regular out-of-country didn’t cover COVID. And now that people are being vaccinated, I don’t know whether we’ll sell as much. But for anyone who needed to travel this last year, they really should have taken COVID medical insurance because out-of-country medical insurance does not cover,” she said.

Kirk reminds, even if you are fully vaccinated or have one dose you still have to follow the travel protocols of other countries.

Whether that’s masking, quarantine hotels, or PCR testing.
