St. Mary’s School offering long list of class options in the fall

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Junior high students at St. Mary’s School will have more class options in the fall, which will broaden learning for grades 7-9.

Their vice principal says the 20 additional courses include archery, mythology, psychology, and fitness.

According to Brad van Middelkoop, the school wanted to provide students with a well-rounded experience.

“We want to engage students any way we can. So we have to do our core work, but if it’s a Rube Goldberg machine or a bow and arrow that’s exciting you and bringing you into the building, and you’re excited to be here for that, then that’s what we’re trying to do here,” van Middelkoop added.

A new three-semester schedule will also allow students to take up to 6 options throughout the year.

Students said what areas interest them, and the school added those options to the timetable.

“I find it’s a great way, it’s another aspect of learning and it kind of helps if you maybe had a hard math class or hard science class you can go to band or go to choral or dance and relax,” grade 8 student Olivia Glasgo said.

St. Mary’s also has an extensive fine arts program for performing and visual arts. That includes drama, dance, choral, and band.

A new flex period will also allow students to enjoy the new class options.
