MEDICINE HAT, AB – Southeastern Alberta is under a severe thunderstorm watch on Wednesday.

Environment Canada issued the watches at 10:27 a.m. for its Medicine Hat-Bow Island-Suffield, Cypress Hill Provincial Park-Foremost and Lethbridge-Taber-Milk River areas.

The watches read:

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon. Potential for development exists in southeastern Alberta as well as in northern Montana, with those storms capable of moving into southeastern Alberta later this afternoon.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

Severe thunderstorm watches have also been issued for the northwestern part of Alberta.
