New outdoor exhibit at the Esplanade

MEDICINE HAT, AB – If you’re missing seeing art at the Esplanade, a new outdoor exhibit is now open.

The Tumbleweed Project Space, is accessible to everyone and can be viewed from the street.

It’s a way for the Esplanade to bring art to the community while still following provincial health restrictions.

Sierra Zukowski, a Travelling Exhibition assistant at the City of Medicine Hat says art is such an integral part of our lives.

“When it’s taken away in times like the pandemic when you don’t have access to those community supports and those creative outlets, you can really tell how important it is,” Zukowski said.

The exhibit will feature work from local artists and community groups and those behind it hope it brings vibrancy to the downtown core.

Evelyn Kleis is the first artist featured with her exhibit called Cosmic Curiosities. The retired teacher-turned-artist never thought she would be featured at the Esplanade.

“I was given a call and said they’d like to do a show and I thought ‘wow that’s kinda cool,” Kleis said. “These windows were more like advertising community stuff but not anything artistic or such. So it was kinda neat when we started talking about putting it in here.”

Program manager Genevieve Farrell says the current exhibit will be available until August 18.

“It’s the perfect thing to celebrate community artists, the talent that’s found in Medicine Hat and have it right on the street level that people can see it any time of day,” Farrell said. “It’s 24 hours.”

The exhibit is on the corner of Second Street and Fourth Avenue and it will feature a new local artist every three months.
