JBS Foods to build affordable duplex in Brooks

May 11, 2021 | 2:47 PM

Two families in the city of Brooks will have access to a more affordable home.

JBS foods announced a $300,000 investment towards building an affordable housing duplex in the city, as part of their Hometown Strong initiative.

” This is an important investment that will serve the Brooks community for generations to come,” said David Colwell, president, JBS Foods Canada.

The company will be working in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta.

The duplex will be located at 2nd Avenue east.

The two families chosen can buy the properties with no down payment and no interest.

Their mortgage payment will also go to support future Habitat for Humanity projects.

Mayor Barry Morishita called it an exciting announcement for the city.

” Just seeing the partnership between a private company a non for profit, and the city itself who contributed the land it is really exciting to see what good outcomes you get from that type of thing and JBS isn’t finished,” Morishita said.

In October 2020, JBS Canada announced a $2 million investment towards supporting the community’s future. The building of the duplex is part of the investment.

Construction on the duplex is set to begin in the spring.
