‘Police incident’ reported outside Vancouver International Airport

May 9, 2021 | 6:39 PM

RICHMOND, B.C. — Officials with the Vancouver International Airport say a “police incident” outside the main terminal has been contained to the site.

Traffic cones are blocking off a section of the international and Canada departure areas at the airport, and police have screened off a section near the terminal entrance, but neither airport officials nor RCMP will give more details about the incident.

One employee at a nearby car rental centre says he heard multiple gunshots fired in the area.

A Twitter statement from the Vancouver Airport Authority says the airport is open, safe and flights are operating.

It says airport officials are working with the RCMP to respond to the incident.

The airport is located on Sea Island in Richmond, B.C., the neighbouring city to Vancouver.

Shortly after the incident, police temporarily closed all connecting bridges and shut down the SkyTrain line to and from the airport.

Police have yet to comment publicly on the matter.
