COVID-19 update: Province says 50.5 percent of active cases are variants of concern

EDMONTON, AB- Nearly half of all active cases in the province account for variants of concern, the province’s chief medical officer of health said in a Twitter update Sunday.

The province confirmed 1,183 new cases of COVID-19. That’s in addition to 942 new variants of concern cases. The total number of active cases is 14, 293. Variant cases make up 7,217 of the total number of active cases.

Province-wide 376 are in hospital, including 90 in ICU. The province also confirmed one additional death.

Testing for the virus continues, with 15,000 tests completed over 24 hours. The province’s positivity rate is 7.9 per cent.

In Medicine Hat, there are 88 active cases, 560 recoveries and 17 deaths.

Cypress County has 25 active cases, and 149 recoveries.

The County of Newell has seven active cases, 160 recoveries, and two deaths.

The city of Brooks has four active cases 1353 recoveries and 14 deaths.

The Municipal District of Taber has 52 active cases, 382 recoveries and six deaths.

The County of Forty Mile has seven active cases. 123 recoveries and three recorded deaths.

Lethbridge County has 114 active cases, 661 recoveries, and eight recorded deaths.

The City of Lethbridge has 498 active cases, 3062 recoveries, and 30 deaths.

Taking to Twitter, Dr. Hinshaw reminded the public to stay home and complete the AHS self-assessment for testing if symptoms are present.
