Green cart yard waste program returning for another season

MEDICINE HAT — The City of Medicine Hat Yard Waste Collection program returns for another season on Monday April 12.

The program has grown in popularity in each of the last few years, with nearly 14 thousand green carts now in use in Medicine Hat.

The green carts are set out on the regular collection day for the gray and blue carts, and residents are asked to use them for vegetative waste.

Jamie Garland, the manager of services for city assets department, says people need to take particular care placing tree branches into the bins.

” The diameter is really important” says Garland.

“Try to keep them under 12 inches in diameter or it causes safety issues with the composting at the landfill”, according to Garland.

The green carts are not to be used for things like plastics or other waste, which should be put into the appropriate gray or blue collection bins.

Garland says the optional green waste cart program has been growing by 3 to 4 hundred carts each year, with just under 14 thousand green bins now in use.

Residents wishing to join the program pay a one time fee of $50 to obtain a green cart for their residence.
