Emergency reminders after fire at Police Point Park

Apr 8, 2021 | 4:34 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Fire crews quickly put out a brush fire at Police Point Park yesterday afternoon.

It was a reminder that dry weather and strong winds are a safety hazard and can make small fires spread quickly.

Medicine Hat Fire Capt. Chris Prosofsky has some preventative reminders when it comes to these dry conditions. He says to watch how you’re discarding cigarettes and litter.

“All the things that can contribute to grass fires,” Prosofsky said. “Like people did yesterday if you do see any smoke or any problems, definitely call 911 and we’ll have the guys ready to go.”

Prosofsky also wants to remind people about safety on the road.

He says when emergency vehicles, including fire, police and EMS, are driving with sirens on, pull over to the right and make a full stop.

“The reason we say stop is because oftentimes people kinda beetle along but then we want to turn right and then they’re blocking the right hand lane and we can’t get right,” Prosofsky said. “If you stop, we know you’re safe, we’re safe and we can carry on.”

If drivers don’t yield and stop to emergency vehicles with flashing lights, you may be subject to fines and demerits.
