MEDICINE HAT, AB – After a few years of casual play, Jared Ziegenhagel wants to take his disc golf game and the popularity of the sport in Medicine Hat to the next level.

Ziegenhagel is one of the organizers of the Medicine Hat Disc Golf League. It will tee off on June 6 with a tournament and two leagues will begin play the week of June 15.

He says disc golf has grown exponentially in Medicine Hat and worldwide.

“It’s already growing quite a bit but we obviously are trying to kick it off in a good way this year and make it more exciting for people who like to play,” he says.

The tournament will take place at Leinweber Park, which will also host the Thursday evening league. Central Park will host the Tuesday league. Both start at 7 p.m. and will be six weeks long.

Ziegenhagel, who has Trent Roset helping with organization, says the separate leagues and courses will offer more people the chance to play, regardless of skill and experience.

“Central Park is a little bit smaller, a little bit more confined, you’re in Central Park up on the hill there. A nice fun little course, a lot of people like to play it; there’s not a lot of hazards so you can’t really lose a disc other than throwing it across the road or in the street something like that,” he says. “Where here (Leinweber) it’s a little bit longer it’s a little bit more challenging, you have to watch for the water.”

Both are nine-hole courses.

Overall, Ziegenhagel says the Central Park course is well-suited for beginners and the Leinweber course is for an intermediate level of player.

One disc will do if you just want to dip your toe in disc golf. Starter packs of three discs – think driver, iron and putter – are available at Gravity Sports and Games Galore for about $50 if you want to dive right in.

The tournament and leagues are open to everyone. The only limit on registration is the time needed for everyone to play their round. It’s only single play for this year, but Ziegenhagel hopes there’s enough interest that they can expand in the future.

Thanks to help from sponsors the cost for a league and tournament is $20. There’s a discount if you sign up for all three.
