Chalk opinions on draft curriculum left outside MLA’s office

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Chalk messages opposing the new draft K-6 curriculum were written outside of Brooks-Medicine Hat MLA Michaela Glasgo’s office late last week.

One drawing says ‘listen to teachers, while another one states the curriculum drafts are Eurocentric, Americanized and wrong.

This comes after the Alberta government released the draft curriculum last week.

Teachers and parents in our city and across the province say the draft is not age-appropriate and the amount of content students need to learn is too much.

Glasgo says the UCP’s new curriculum sets students up for success and she’s heard from lots of parents who support it.

“I think there’s a lot of hyperbole and special interest to our concern about certain aspects of the curriculum and spreading misinformation instead of actually looking at what’s there,” Glasgo said.

She acknowledges that this is a working document and says now is the time for parents, students and teachers to give feedback.
